Lord Tyrion’s Speech

If you are here because of the title of this blog, then you are already a Game of Thrones (GOT) fan and have probably watched the entire series, which aired from 2011-2019. I’m the first to admit that I am a notoriously late to the party, but a recent TV swap with my daughter has allowed access to channels previously unavailable to me…so I’ve started watching GOT.  Although bloody and shocking in its portrayal of warfare, violence, evil, and the degradation and abuse of women…GOT is an epic story, riveting, well-written, and supported by a talented cast of actors.

The Blackwater Speech by Tyrion Lannister gave me chills.  A character universally beloved for his portrayal of intelligence, cunning, and quick wit, Lord Tyrion also displays integrity and kindness - even to those who dismiss him as ‘half a man.’  Near the end of Season 2, when King Joffrey abandons his men mid-battle, we witness a massive character shift in Lord Tyrion as he grapples with self-doubt and fear while realizing that no one else will lead the Battle of Blackwater. “I’ll lead the attack,” he says, almost to himself, and then stronger, “I’ll lead the attack!” to no avail, as the men doubt him.  He then steps into his power and delivers a spine-tingling speech to rouse the army and save all that he holds dear.

Having fought my own battles, I recognize the courage required to change one’s perspective mid-fight.  I know how hard it is to challenge everything I once thought to be true in order to forge a new way of living.  Because I won the battle for my soul, I need to step up and show that there is another way out…a door to freedom, to peace, and to joy.  Is it frightening to shout my beliefs to the world?  Absolutely, but shout I must, even if no one is listening yet.

Drawing heavily from Lord Tyrion’s Speech, here is my battle cry:

They say I am only a woman,

and that there is but one way to live.

There is another way…

and I’m going to show you.

Don’t fight to save your ego. Don’t fight for dogma.

Don’t fight for acceptance or power or status.

Don’t fight for glory, and don’t fight for riches…

because none of it matters.

This is your lifetime; your responsibility

Whatever your gender, this is an internal battle. Fight complacency.

Fight for your body, your mind, and your heart. Fight for wholeness.

Fight for wisdom. Fight for peace.

Fight to remember your soul, and change your destiny.

Fight for hope, and change our destiny.
